The game was initially pitched as a sequel to the popular Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, but with the addition of full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes. The game that would become known as Castlevania: Rondo of Blood was first conceptualized as a game for the TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM system by Konami's Hiromitsu Sadamoto.
